WBA

World Boxing Association

Founded: 1921HQ: Panama City, PanamaPresident: Gilberto Mendoza Jr.

The oldest of the four major sanctioning bodies, the World Boxing Association traces its roots to the National Boxing Association founded in the United States in 1921, then reorganised into the WBA in 1962. It is now based in Panama and is widely considered the most political of the four, partly because of its long tradition of recognising multiple champions in the same division.

Ranking methodology

Twelve-month rolling rankings updated monthly. Activity, level of opposition, and championship-bout results are weighted heavily; ties broken by a Championships Committee vote. Rated fighters must defend or remain active inside a 9-month window to keep a top-15 slot.

Super-title criteria

A WBA "Super" champion is created when a regular champion unifies an additional major title (WBC, IBF, or WBO) or wins three consecutive championship-level bouts against rated opposition. The Super designation can be granted retroactively or in real time by the Championships Committee.

Notable controversies

  • Recognising as many as four belt-holders per division (Super, Regular, Interim, Gold) — the practice that triggered the WBA's 2021 announcement of a "consolidation" plan that has only partially been delivered.
  • Repeatedly stripping unified champions of the 'Super' belt on technicalities to revive vacant 'Regular' titles for sanctioning fees.
  • Long history of high sanctioning percentages on undercards in regions where local promoters have political relationships with WBA officials.
