Lateral Shuffle

Quick lateral movement using short, repeated slide-steps. Used to circle an opponent, take an angle, or evade a charging attack while keeping the lead hand pointed at the target. Lomachenko's signature 'matrix' movement is, mechanically, a sustained lateral shuffle combined with rotational angle changes.

Key points

  • Short, repeated slide-steps — not big strides.
  • Lead hand stays pointed at the opponent.
  • Always move toward the opponent's rear hand side (you take their angle).
  • Maintain stance width.
  • Be ready to punch out of every shuffle.

Common mistakes

  • Crossing the feet during a sustained shuffle.
  • Letting the lead hand drift away from the centre line.
  • Shuffling laterally without an angle — you become a moving target without an exit.

Drills

  1. Rope shuffle: place a rope on the floor; shuffle laterally over and back for 1-minute rounds.
  2. Mitts: catcher walks around a circle; you stay on their lead-side perimeter for 3 minutes.
