Parry Counter

A counter where the boxer parries the opponent's jab inward with the rear hand and immediately fires the cross through the now-open guard. Used masterfully by Vasiliy Lomachenko, who parries and steps to an angle simultaneously.

Key points

  • Parry the jab inward with the rear palm.
  • The cross fires at the moment of the parry — same beat.
  • Step the lead foot off-line during the parry-counter.
  • Lead hand returns to guard immediately.

Common mistakes

  • Parry too late — gets jabbed.
  • No cross — wasted defensive action.
  • Standing still — caught by a follow-up.

Drills

  1. Partner drill: parry-and-counter on every jab the partner throws, for 3 rounds.
  2. Mitts: catcher throws jabs; you parry and counter on the beat.
