Step-Back Jab

A counter where the boxer steps backward AND throws a jab in the same motion — meeting the rushing opponent's chin with a stiff jab as the distance opens. Used by every defensive-minded boxer in history. The combination of distance and stiffness makes the punch surprisingly heavy.

Key points

  • Rear foot moves first; lead foot follows.
  • Jab fires at the moment the rear foot lands.
  • Step out at an angle, not straight back.
  • Rear hand stays at the temple — opponent's cross may follow.

Common mistakes

  • Stepping back without the jab — invites the opponent to keep coming.
  • Falling backward — lose balance.
  • Stepping in a straight line — predictable.

Drills

  1. Partner drill: partner rushes forward; you step back at an angle and counter-jab.
  2. Heavy-bag: step-back-jab on every imaginary advance.
